Fade, Undercut, Crop — what’s the difference and which one to choose for you

A men’s haircut has long ceased to be just “short and neat.” Today it is part of the style, a way to express character, emphasize masculinity and modernity. At the BarberOK barbershop, we help clients choose between popular haircuts every day: Fade, Undercut and Crop. Each of them has its own history, technology and image. Let’s figure out how they differ and how to choose the one for you.

What is a Fade haircut

Fade is a style of men’s haircut with a smooth transition of length from longer hair on top to a short-cropped or shaved back of the head and temples. There are varieties: Low Fade, Mid Fade and High Fade, the choice depends on the shape of the face, hair growth and the desired visual accent. This haircut emphasizes the cheekbones and gives the image severity and expressiveness. The style became popular thanks to celebrities such as Will Smith, Drake and Chris Evans. It came from the American army fashion of the 40s, and was later picked up by hip-hop and sports culture, becoming a symbol of neatness and modern style.

What is the essence of the Undercut

The Undercut is a contrasting haircut in which the back of the head and temples are shaved, and the top is left much longer. This style became especially popular thanks to celebrities: David Beckham, Brad Pitt, Michael Pitt and Cillian Murphy in the TV series “Peaky Blinders” brought the Undercut to the peak of fashion. This image emphasizes individuality and masculinity, requires styling – especially if you choose voluminous, combed back or textured shapes. Today, the Undercut is not just a trend, but an element of self-expression and style for those who want to look bright and confident.

What is a Crop and who suits it

Crop is a short men’s haircut with an even or slightly uneven fringe edge. This haircut came to us from Europe and quickly gained popularity due to its practicality and aesthetics. One of the first to make the Crop popular was the French footballer Antoine Griezmann, as well as the actor Tom Hardy. Now this haircut can be seen on Zayn Malik, Timothée Chalamet and even some characters from Netflix series.

Crop looks especially good on men with thick, straight or wavy hair. It is an ideal choice for those who want a modern and neat look without the daily effort of styling.

How to choose a haircut?

At BarberOK, we take into account:

  • Hair type;
  • Face shape;
  • Lifestyle;
  • Your expectations from the look.

Care and maintenance

Fade requires regular correction every 2-3 weeks to maintain a clear outline and smooth transition. This frequency is especially important for those who value neatness and rigor of the look. Light texturizing pastes or matte clay are suitable for styling — they will emphasize the shape and add the necessary volume.

Undercut should be updated every 4-5 weeks. This is especially important if the haircut maintains a pronounced contrast between the top and sides. Pomade, wax or cream are often used for styling — depending on the desired effect: sleek back styling, textured volume or a slightly careless style. Maintaining the shape requires attention, especially with a longer crown.

Crop is the most unpretentious in care. It does not require frequent corrections and is ideal for those who prefer minimalism and practicality. Styling is possible with the help of a light cream or paste if you want to create the effect of wet hair or slight disorder on the head.

With each of the haircuts, our stylists share recommendations on styling and care, and also show the client how to diversify the image: change the parting, add a different volume or accent. This allows you to adapt the haircut to different occasions and moods.
